Before choosing a boxing glove its vital the hands are protected using hand wraps which are a length of cotton or cotton/ elastic material with a thumb loop and Velcro closure that wrap around the hand and wrist to stabilize the wrist and help protect the hands and knuckles whilst punching.
A must for Boxing Classes
Hand warps are essential for heavy or prolonged boxing workouts and a must for beginners, women and children and weak wrists. If time is a consideration, Quick Wraps are a good alternative. This subject should not be overseen if you are taking boxing classes.
Generally there are two choices when selecting a glove for boxing workouts… do we select a bag mitt or a boxing glove? The choice of glove really depends on the type of boxing workout and whether or not we intend to include sparring.
A Bag mitt has fairly modest padding, but the most succinct feature about it is that it has an unpadded thumb and is great for speed and accuracy work and for general boxing fitness workouts.
Alternatively you can choose a Boxing glove; this has a padded thumb and varies in weight from 6 to 16 ounce being great for strength work and being the only glove you can use if you want to go sparring.
The Fitness Benefits of different Boxing Gloves
Remember the different weighted gloves with give you different training effects i.e. something like a 16 ounce glove which is pretty heavy is going to lead to increased muscle mass and high heart rate during the session giving the boxer a great cardio vascular workout. Be aware that if you are working with any neck or shoulder issues, or you are a beginner boxer, a sustained workout with heavy gloves may be too strong for you.
The Bag mitts are nice and light in comparison to the heavier boxing glove and are excellent for speed, accuracy and technique work.
Worth noting, are the benefits of cotton inners for boxing gloves which go over the top of the hand wrap. Cotton inners provide additional hygienic protection for hire or share gloves, and act as a sweat retainer for personal gloves.
